Khajuraho's divine structures are a tribute to art itself, acting as a testament to art's colorful, ebullient and yet sublime essence. Khajuraho's talking murals depict diverse erotic posturings and celebrate the essential sensuality of humankind. Khajuraho is a name, which has been derived from the term Khajur, or the Date Palm and these trees used to grow around the Khajurvahaka Tal or the lake. Khajuraho was founded by the Chandela ruler who grew out of the union of the Moon God, Chandrama and one Hemvati who was the widowed daughter of a minister from the court of the King of Benaras. Khajuraho has its earliest temples being built in coarse granite but the most famous of the structures, which are part of the World Heritage, are built in fine and grained sandstone which has been quarried from neighboring Panna mines.
